Amazon Web Services has arrived in the vast arena of cloud services in healthcare. Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure were waiting for the e-commerce giant to join.
Healthcare is typically a slow step in technology adoption compared to other industries. AWS began working in education, for example with AWS Educate, in 2015.
Last week, AWS for Health was unveiled even though the cloud services platform is already used by “thousands of health and life sciences customers worldwide”. Moderna is probably the best-known company to have used various AWS services to support its drug development, including a COVID-19 vaccine.
Last April, Google Cloud released its healthcare application programming interface (API) to the public a few years after it was first launched.
More recently, Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare became generally available in October via Azure APIs for healthcare interoperability.
