Amazon Web Services is looking to convince customers to replace local files with a caching gateway channel leading to an SMB filer in their public cloud.
The Amazon FSx File Gateway was started as a local virtual machine or hardware appliance. This will receive file access requests from local users and applications and send them to the FSx for Windows file server running on the public cloud. Network connectivity should be optimized and the FSx File Gateway maintains a cache of frequently accessed files, allowing low-latency access to these files and minimizing network transfers.
Steve Roberts, an advocate for Amazon developers who focus on developing .NET and PowerShell on AWS, said this was “a new type of AWS Storage Gateway that lets you access data that Amazon FSx for Windows File Servers are stored in the cloud instead of still using them and managing local file servers. “
