Amazon Web Services and Blue Mountain Community College offer skills training…


When Amazon Web Services (AWS) began building data centers in Northeast Oregon, the company saw an opportunity to offer training to the local community to develop the skills they would need for a new career in the industry — and it did Blue Mountain Community College was there to help.

In 2015, AWS partnered with Peter Hernberg, who has been teaching math and computer science at the college in the city of Pendleton for eight years, to develop the training program for data center technicians. Open to all, regardless of background or skill level, the year-long program prepares them for employment in data centers and the broader IT sector. In addition, AWS provides a total of $100,000 in scholarships annually, significantly reducing student participation costs.
