Dear Mr. Bezos:
We write about recent Amazon political censorship activity, specifically the decision to remove When Harry Became Sally by conservative scholar Ryan Anderson from the Amazon website, Kindle, and Audible platforms. In the past 72 hours, Amazon has failed to provide a sufficient explanation for how Anderson’s book, which topped two of Amazon’s bestseller lists prior to its release in 2018, allegedly breached a vague, undefined, offensive content ‘standard.
When Harry became Sally in 2018, it sparked important debates in the national media and among policy makers, and remains one of the most thoroughly researched and compassionately discussed books on the subject. By removing this book from its marketplaces and services, Amazon has fearlessly exploited its oversized market share to silence an important voice just for the crime of violating the awakened groupthink.
The internet is best when it’s open …
