SPRINGFIELD, Mon. (KY3) – On Tuesday, June 8th, all Amazon devices, including: Amazon Echo devices, ring security cameras, outdoor lighting, motion sensors, and tile trackers, will automatically be set to share your network through Amazon Sidewalk Registered.
According to Amazon, “Sidewalk uses wireless Bluetooth and 900 MHz radio signals to connect compatible devices beyond the normal range of Wi-Fi capability”.
“Sidewalk is designed with multiple layers of privacy and security in mind to protect the data transmitted over the network and to ensure customer safety and control,” said Amazon.
Although Amazon introduced this layer of security, sharing network connection raises some internet and information security concerns, and a local Springfield expert told us why some would opt out.
According to Shawn Kirkbride, owner of Rethink Tech, expanding your network could pose some security issues, and we don’t know the long-term effects of sidewalks.
