Amazon.com Inc. has revealed its plan to invest 10 billion euros, equivalent to $10.7 billion, in upgrading its data center infrastructure and logistics network in Germany. This investment follows a recent announcement by Amazon Web Services Inc. of spending 7.8 billion euros on the AWS European Sovereign Cloud platform in Germany.
Part of the 10 billion euro investment includes adding 4,000 employees to Amazon’s logistics network in Germany by the end of the year, with new hires working in various cities. This increase in workforce will bring Amazon’s total number of employees in Germany to over 40,000. Additionally, the investment will be used to build, maintain, and operate the AWS cloud data center cluster in the Frankfurt metropolitan area, which currently comprises three availability zones and two local zones.
In a separate initiative, AWS will invest $7.8 billion in Germany by 2040 to support the deployment of its European Sovereign Cloud. The first data center under this project is expected to be operational in Brandenburg by the end of next year. The European Sovereign Cloud facilities will be solely operated by EU-based staff and are targeted towards government agencies and regulated industries.
Aside from its fulfillment centers and cloud facilities, Amazon also operates engineering centers in Germany. The company plans to expand its research and development campus in Berlin to support work in robotics and artificial intelligence projects. AWS has been integrating new AI services into its public cloud, while Amazon’s fulfillment centers utilize internally designed robots driven by AI models.
Amazon’s investment in Germany underscores its commitment to enhancing its operations, particularly in cloud infrastructure and logistics. The company’s focus on expanding its workforce, building data centers, and investing in new technologies like AI showcases its dedication to innovation and growth in the region. The planned developments aim to support the needs of heavily regulated organizations and government agencies, as well as improve overall efficiency and service delivery in Germany.
