Amazon is making a big investment in Germany to drive innovation and expand its logistics network and cloud infrastructure. The company plans to invest 10 billion euros ($10.7 billion) and create 4,000 new jobs this year in three new logistics centers. By the end of 2024, Amazon’s total number of permanent employees in Germany will reach 40,000.

Rocco Bräuniger, the country manager of Amazon Germany, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to the country and its focus on innovation. He highlighted the role of Amazon Web Services (AWS) in enabling businesses of all sizes to grow and innovate using the cloud. This investment is expected to have a positive impact on the country, creating a wide range of job opportunities and investments in various sectors.

As part of its investment plans, Amazon is spending €7.8 billion (US$8.3 billion) on developing its AWS European sovereign cloud to meet Europe’s digital sovereignty requirements. The first AWS Region in Europe will be launched in Brandenburg in late 2025. Additionally, AWS plans to invest €8.8 billion (US$9.4 billion) by 2026 to continue building and operating its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, launched in Frankfurt Rhein-Main in 2014.

Stefan Hoechbauer, Managing Director Germany and Europe at AWS, emphasized Germany’s position as a hub of innovation in Europe. AWS is committed to helping German customers lead and create new technologies by providing a wide range of cloud capabilities, including AI. The investment in Germany’s digital infrastructure will support the growing demand for AWS technologies in the country.

Amazon has invested more than €77 billion ($82.6 billion) in Germany since 2010, with four R&D centers focusing on products and services for AWS, Amazon Music, Fire TV, Alexa, and compliance technologies. The Berlin Development Center will see expanded laboratories to develop artificial intelligence and robotics technologies.

Overall, Amazon’s investment in Germany reflects its commitment to driving innovation, creating job opportunities, and supporting the country’s digital infrastructure. The company’s focus on cloud technology and logistics will contribute to the growth and development of various industries in Germany in the coming years.
