Amazon.com Inc. is reportedly developing a new AI chatbot called “Metis” in an effort to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Powered by Amazon’s internal AI model called Olympus, Metis is set to deliver text- and image-based responses in a conversational manner. It will also have the ability to share links to source responses, suggest follow-up queries, and generate images, as well as use augmented retrieval generation to provide updated answers such as stock prices.

Amazon is aiming for Metis to function as an AI agent, capable of autonomously performing tasks by analyzing data and making decisions based on programmed algorithms and learned patterns. This move comes after Amazon founder Jeff Bezos raised concerns about the company falling behind in the AI race, prompting Amazon to invest in developing advanced AI technologies.

In the past, Amazon has made strides in the AI space by launching services such as Amazon Q, a generative AI assistance tailored to businesses, and working on a new version of Alexa that integrates with its Titan AI model. To further support AI startups, Amazon Web Services Inc. recently announced a $230 million commitment to unlock cloud credits for generative AI companies, providing access to computing power, AI models, and specialized infrastructure.

Mark Garman, the new CEO of AWS, emphasized Amazon’s deep investment in AI and its commitment to helping customers transform their businesses through AI technology. With a focus on leading in generative AI, Amazon continues to push the boundaries of AI innovation and aims to collaborate with industry leaders to drive progress in the field.

Overall, Amazon’s efforts to develop advanced AI technologies like Metis demonstrate the company’s commitment to staying competitive in the rapidly evolving AI landscape and providing cutting-edge services to its customers.
