Amazon is investigating Perplexity AI for suspected content scraping

Amazon’s cloud division is investigating Perplexity AI, an artificial intelligence startup, to determine if it is violating Amazon Web Services (AWS) terms by scraping websites that have blocked such activities. AWS is reviewing information provided by WIRED, which suggests that Perplexity is using content from websites that explicitly prohibit crawling. While the Robots Exclusion Protocol is not legally binding, complying with such terms is important to AWS. Perplexity has been accused by Forbes of plagiarizing content and creating “copycat stories” that resemble journalistic pieces without proper attribution to the original source. Perplexity’s CEO, Aravind Srinivas, denied ignoring the protocol and lying about it, stating that the company uses third-party web crawlers in addition to its own. AWS states that customers are responsible for complying with its terms of service, and that violations of abusive and illegal activities are taken seriously. The situation is still under review by both Amazon and Perplexity.
