Amazon.com, the leading provider of cloud computing and data storage services globally, has revealed plans to invest an additional €10 billion in Germany to expand its cloud infrastructure and logistics network. This investment includes €8.8 billion dedicated to building and maintaining its cloud infrastructure for AWS in the Frankfurt region by 2026, along with an additional €7.8 billion committed through 2040 to develop a sovereign cloud business in the country.
The announcement, made during a meeting between Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to expand its data center network worldwide. This move follows similar commitments made by Amazon in countries such as Spain, France, Mexico, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Singapore. The company recently declared plans to invest €15.7 billion in Spain by 2033 and €1.2 billion in infrastructure and IT in France.
Despite its aggressive expansion plans, Amazon’s cloud computing business, AWS, faces stiff competition from rivals like Microsoft Corporation. This competition is intensifying as the industry works to meet the growing demand for data processing and storage capacity driven by the proliferation of artificial intelligence programs.
European regulators are pressuring cloud companies to store data within the EU to address privacy and security concerns. In response, Amazon announced in May its intention to build a European sovereign cloud that will be under the exclusive control of individuals within the European Union.
Overall, Amazon’s significant investment in Germany underscores its commitment to expanding its cloud infrastructure and logistics network globally, as it aims to strengthen its position in the competitive cloud computing market.
