Amazon increased security at its New York Amazon Web Services Summit following disruptions at the AWS Summit in Washington, DC by activists protesting Project Nimbus. Activists were not allowed to attend the keynote speech by Matt Wood, vice president of artificial intelligence products, and security confiscated posters and flyers. The heightened security measures show Amazon’s attempt to prevent further dissent, similar to Google’s firing of 50 employees after a protest about a cloud computing contract with the Israeli government. The activists behind the planned disruption were from No Tech for Apartheid (NOTA), a coalition of tech workers and grassroots groups. Former employees of Google, Amazon, Meta, and another tech worker were involved in the planned protest. Outside the summit, NOTA activists handed out informational leaflets and held signs criticizing Amazon and Google’s involvement in Project Nimbus.
