Amazon Web Services (AWS) has unveiled its plans to invest a substantial 8.8 billion euros in Germany by 2026. This investment is part of a larger commitment by Amazon to inject an additional 10 billion euros into its cloud infrastructure and logistics network in Germany, signaling the company’s ambition to strengthen its foothold in Europe.

As a part of this initiative, Amazon is set to create 4,000 new jobs in Germany throughout the year, with the introduction of three new fulfillment centers in various locations. These fulfillment centers include openings in Horn-Bad Meinberg, Erfurt, and Großenkneten, catering to a wide range of job opportunities across more than 100 cities and municipalities in Germany. This extensive job creation effort aims to bolster Amazon’s workforce in Germany to over 40,000 permanent employees.

The investment strategy in Germany comes on the heels of a recently announced 7.8 billion euro investment in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, designed to establish an independent cloud service for Europe. This cloud initiative is poised to kick off with a new AWS Region in the Brandenburg state by the end of 2025.

AWS is firmly committed to supporting the technological advancement in Germany by focusing on the burgeoning customer demand for AWS services, including cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). The company’s ambitious investment plan is projected to contribute a significant 15.4 billion euros to Germany’s GDP over the period, while also fostering an average of 15,200 full-time jobs each year within the local supply chain.

Stefan Hoechbauer, Managing Director Germany and Europe at AWS, emphasized Germany’s pivotal role in driving innovation across Europe. He highlighted AWS’s dedication to enabling German businesses to lead the charge in developing new technologies and services utilizing AWS’s cloud capabilities, including generative AI. To accommodate the rising demand for their services, AWS is channeling significant resources into enhancing Germany’s digital infrastructure while also championing digital skills development and talent programs nationwide.

Currently, AWS boasts 105 availability zones across 33 geographic regions worldwide, with plans in motion to introduce 18 additional zones and six more AWS Regions in various countries. These regions and zones are strategically placed to ensure business continuity and high availability for customers, utilizing a network structure that minimizes latency and bolsters resilience for applications that operate across multiple availability zones.
