AIST and IBM Collaborate to Drive Quantum Technology Industrialization in Japan – Quantum Computing Report

AIST, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan, has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with IBM on May 10, 2024. This collaboration aims to advance the industrialization of quantum technology in Japan by developing next-generation quantum computers and enhancing their supply chains. IBM plans to involve Japanese industries in the procurement processes for future quantum computing system components and work with AIST to support supplier development.

There have been rumors about the development of a 10,000-qubit quantum machine by 2029 as part of this collaboration, although neither company has officially confirmed this yet. This aligns with IBM’s plans for its Starling system, which were showcased at a quantum roadmap update in December.

By promoting the practical application of quantum computing in various industries, AIST and IBM seek to drive growth in Japan’s quantum sector and build a strong ecosystem focused on creating business value. AIST has shared news of this collaboration on its website, emphasizing the importance of advancing quantum technology in Japan.
