Malaysia’s prime minister warned G20 countries during the G20 summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday that artificial intelligence (AI) will reshape labor markets at a “pace that our institutions will struggle to keep up with.”

“When policies are aligned and rules are predictable, shocks endure less damage. Resilience comes from collective preparedness, not isolation,” Anwar Ibrahim Anwar said, adding that this lesson is important because “the next disruption” will likely be harder to endure.

“Artificial intelligence will reshape labor markets at a pace that our institutions will struggle to keep up with without early investment in transitions. Workers, particularly young people and women, will have to navigate these changes alone,” he said

The world has faced the consequences of a lack of preparation for globalization before, he said, noting that it leads to stagnating wages, declining trust and the rise of politics built on grievances.
