Parents in Western Australia continue to speak out against the state’s new AI-powered seatbelt cameras. A father from Perth described it as an “outrageous assault”.
Perth father Nick Dekker was one of the latest parents punished for a child’s minor offense when he received a $550 fine in the mail earlier this month.
In January, as he drove to the beach on the Kwinana Freeway, Dekker’s 12-year-old daughter briefly tucked her seatbelt under her arm to put her hair in a ponytail.
This momentary adjustment was captured by an AI camera. The result? His partner, the registered owner of the vehicle, received a $550 fine and four penalty points.
