AI the prime suspect after radio stations mistakenly identify reporters as suspected violent perpetrator | Weekly Beast

Identifying the wrong person in a news story is nothing new in journalism, but AI has created a whole new level of danger.

Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) this week investigated whether the rollout of AI-powered newscasts led to a News Corp reporter being incorrectly named as the man who allegedly hit police with a hammer before escaping custody. The journalist’s name was broadcast in several bulletins on Triple M and SAFM channels.

Adelaide Advertiser journalist Dylan Hogarth reported that the alleged perpetrator had been named in court.

Six radio news outlets followed up on his story, but reported: “36-year-old Dylan Hogarth fled on foot last night. Police say if you see him, call Triple-Zero immediately.”

Hogarth took it with humor, saying in a video that it was brought to his attention by friends who asked him if he was on the run.
