It doesn’t surprise me to read that the field of artificial intelligence research is being overwhelmed by the sloppiness it pioneered (Artificial intelligence research has a sloppy problem, scientists say, “It’s a mess,” December 6). But that’s a bit like bears being outraged by all the crap in the forest.

AI researchers are fine with the irresponsible innovations they have unleashed on the world without ever bothering to ask the rest of us if we want it.

But what about the rest of us? The problem is not limited to AI research – its slop generators have flooded other disciplines that are not to blame for this revolution. As a peer reviewer for top ethics journals, I had to point out that the submissions were AI-generated crap. But many academic experts don’t know slop well enough to spot it so quickly. Understandably, they’re also not inclined to delve into the “genre” to get up to speed.
