As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes more integrated into workplace systems and processes, it is transforming both the way work tasks are completed and the work experience itself.
For many employees, AI is testing their tolerance for uncertainty and job insecurity. Some positions are completely automated. Others become superfluous. In many cases, full-time positions are reduced to part-time or contract work.
These changes were clearly visible in this year’s headlines. UPS, for example, announced 20,000 layoffs in April while also expressing interest in using Figure AI humanoid robots to handle warehouse tasks.
More recently, this disruption has extended beyond the front lines. Amazon has announced plans to cut 14,000 corporate jobs as it transitions to AI-powered efficiency. Microsoft has laid off around 6,000 employees – most of them software engineers and programmers – as AI systems now generate up to 30 percent of new code on its platforms.
