“AI is insidious”: After opinion article scandal, universities are asked to introduce clear AI rules

Universities should set minimum standards for academics using AI and require third-party certification to ensure work is “human-authored” before publication, according to a former chancellor of Monash University.

Dr. Alan Finkel, who was also Australia’s chief scientist, has called on universities to set minimum standards for academics who use AI in their work.

“There cannot be anything as loose as what we have seen in the last few days,” he said.

On Wednesday, Cath Ellis, a professor at Western Sydney University, defended her use of AI in creating an article published in The Sydney Morning Herald after her classmates noticed unusual speech patterns. The article defended the university system and included advice such as “Don’t cut….”
