Artificial intelligence (AI) is driving one of the most significant changes in scientific publishing since the introduction of peer review. Since 2022, when OpenAI introduced ChatGPT, the use of AI in research manuscripts has steadily increased. Recent data shows that up to 22% of computer science papers indicate the use of large language models (LLMs). Another study on LLM use in academic publishing found that 16.9% of peer-reviewed texts contained AI content.

The integration of AI tools in all phases of publication is met with equal amounts of recognition and criticism. Proponents tout AI as a catalyst that increases efficiency by automating mundane tasks such as grammar editing, reference formatting, and initial checking.
