Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming part of everyday life. The tools and capabilities offered by major AI companies have grown rapidly in recent years. Education is no exception. Authorities, teachers or scientists reveal how students use tools like ChatGPT to complete homework, including essays. At the same time, AI also offers valuable support for teachers.
How widespread are teachers across Europe using AI? Which countries are ahead? And what do teachers rely on AI for most?
According to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), teacher use of AI varies significantly across Europe as of 2024.
Among 32 countries, the proportion of lower secondary teachers using AI in 2024 ranges from 14 percent in France to 52 percent in Albania. In the European Union (EU-22) this proportion is on average 32 percent, while in the OECD (27 countries) it is 36 percent.
