AI got personal last week and it’s more complicated than we think

Last week, artificial intelligence became personal for me. It also became clear how quickly it is now evolving and that it is more complicated than we thought.

A week ago someone sent me a link to an online article detailing a heated confrontation between me and Commonwealth Bank CEO Matt Comyn on the set of 7.30am.

The story was 2,000 words long, very detailed and included pictures of Comyn and I arguing in front of 7.30am presenter Sarah Ferguson before Matt throws away his microphone and storms off.

Not a single word or photo of it was true. It was an AI fake. I won’t link to it as that would draw more attention to it. The article was compelling and many people have written to me since then asking if it was true.

Then that evening, a guy named Matt Shumer, co-founder of an AI company in New York City, published a 4,800-word essay titled “Something Big Happened,” which has since gone viral.
