Artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras have helped save a rock fisherman in one of New South Wales’ deadliest fishing spots.
The 45-minute recovery operation earlier this month was the first emergency activation of the technology at the Kiama Blowhole south of Wollongong and proved it worked, according to Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steven Pearce.
A replay of the footage shows two men being knocked off their feet by a large wave and thrown into the water.
“The cameras detected that both individuals were swept off the rock platform and one was lucky enough to climb back up,” Pearce said.
“Because the gentleman was wearing a life jacket, he was able to stay afloat while the TOLL rescue helicopter was able to intervene with life-saving aid.
“It showed that the project was a success.”
