Cybersecurity threats are expected to become increasingly complex in the coming years as autonomous artificial intelligence (AI) agents take on a larger role in business environments and become both targets and potential risks themselves. Companies that deploy AI assistants without adequate controls could face new forms of data leaks, internal risks and compliance challenges.
AI as an insider
It is predicted that by 2026, AI agents will overtake human employees as the main source of internal data leaks in companies. The increasing reliance on AI co-pilots and assistants – which are often implemented without a thorough understanding of existing data management vulnerabilities – can result in sensitive corporate information being inadvertently exposed or accessed by unintended parties. AI agents could take over existing problems such as excessive sharing permissions, unclassified documents, and outdated access rights on platforms such as cloud storage and corporate intranets.
