Emotional support is an increasingly common reason why people turn to generative artificial intelligence chatbots and wellness applications. However, these tools currently lack the scientific evidence and necessary regulations to keep users safe, according to a new health advisory from the American Psychological Association.

The APA Health Advisory on the Use of Generative AI Chatbots and Wellness Applications for Mental Health examined consumer-facing technologies that people rely on for mental health advice and treatment, even when that is not their intended purpose. However, these tools are easily accessible and inexpensive – making them an attractive option for people who have difficulty finding or affording treatment from licensed mental health providers.
