AI and humans collide in the world’s largest creativity experiment

AI has reached a new benchmark, performing better than the average human in a recognized creativity test of 100,000 people. But there’s more to the story than just the results, which underscores how difficult it is to put “creativity” into a measurable framework.

Researchers at the Université de Montréal conducted a large-scale study comparing 100,000 people with the current leading generative AI models to assess the creative power of both. It is the largest comparative study of its kind ever conducted.

To measure what most of us would immediately consider a subjective field, the team used different linguistic creativity tasks to assess the latest LLMs, including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, as well as people.

“We have developed a rigorous framework that allows us to compare human and AI creativity using the same tools, based on data from more than 100,000 participants,” said Professor Karim Jerbi from the Department of Psychology at the Université de Montréal.
