AI agents are coming for your dating life

On a Monday One afternoon in March, I watched a pixel art avatar roam the corridors of a virtual office campus in search of a buddy. With dark brown hair and a stubbly chin, the sprite was a representation of me – an AI agent tasked with conversing with other people’s agents to see if we would get along in real life. His first interaction began: “By the way, I’m Joel.”

The simulation was carried out by three London-based developers: Tomáš Hrdlička and siblings Joon Sang and Uri Lee. The thesis behind their Pixel Societies project is that personalized AI agents could help match real people with highly compatible colleagues, friends and even romantic partners.

Each agent runs on a customized version of a large language model, fed with a mix of publicly available data about a person and any additional information they provide. The agents are intended to act as high-fidelity digital twins, faithfully recreating a person’s behavior, language, interests, etc.
