AI adoption may need to be slowed to “save society”, says JP Morgan boss

Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JP Morgan, said artificial intelligence could “go too fast for society” and cause “civil unrest” if governments and companies do not support laid-off workers.

While advances in AI will bring huge benefits, from increasing productivity to curing disease, the technology may need to be phased in to “save society.”

Dimon said companies and governments cannot ignore AI or “bury their heads in the sand.” The Wall Street lender will likely have fewer employees in five years if it adopts AI, he told an audience at the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos.

“Your competitors will use it and countries will use it,” he said. “However, things can go too fast for society, and when things go too fast for society, governments and businesses need to step in together and find a way to retrain people and move them forward over time.”
