As another year draws to a close, many of us will be bracing ourselves for an onslaught of thoughtful Instagram reels, filtered successes — and resolutions to do less doomscrolling.
In fact, social media remains a dominant force in our lives; a way we measure our successes, connect with others and stay up to date with news and trends. It has even changed the language we use, as many of the 2025 words in dictionaries were coined by social media: Rage bait, parasocial And AI flopto name just a few.
However, since the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), the way people use and view social media has also changed dramatically. Increasing misinformation has led to distrust and a sense of disillusionment that is reflected in platform usage.
While Facebook remains the most popular, according to search engine marketing company Semrush, community apps like Reddit and Discord continue to grow as people seek more meaningful, intimate and authentic online spaces.
