OpenAI has pledged that its massive Stargate data center operations won’t drive up electricity costs for ordinary Americans, joining Microsoft in addressing mounting public concerns about AI infrastructure’s impact on utility bills. The ChatGPT maker announced Tuesday that it will “pay our own way on energy” across all its Stargate campuses, promising tailored solutions for each community that could include funding dedicated power supplies, covering grid upgrades, or adding new generation capacity entirely at the company’s expense. The commitment comes exactly one year after Stargate’s January 2025 launch, with OpenAI already halfway toward its goal of 10 gigawatts of AI infrastructure by 2029. Sites are currently under development in Texas, New Mexico, Wisconsin, and Michigan, with the first Abilene, Texas facility already operational.
