After a 95% increase in profits, Oracle fired up to 30,000 employees via email. Tech companies are cutting nearly 1,000 jobs every day

At first it sounded like a cruel April Fool’s joke. But in reality, tech giant Oracle reportedly sent an email to workers at 6 a.m. on March 31 to hand out digital pink slips (1).

“We are sharing with you some difficult news regarding your position,” said the email sent to employees and reviewed by Business Insidersaid. “After careful consideration of Oracle’s current business needs, we have made the decision to eliminate your role as part of a broader organizational change. Therefore, today is your last day of work” (2).

It is unclear exactly how many employees lost their jobs. Reports range from 10,000 (3) to 30,000 (4). The latter would represent almost 19% of the company’s 162,000 employees (5). Monetary-wise reached out to Oracle seeking clarification on the number of job cuts and the reasons for them, but received a response that “Oracle declines to comment.”
