Cleveland Clinic and IBM, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) Hartree Centre in the UK, have announced a groundbreaking partnership focused on advancing healthcare and biomedical science through cutting-edge computing technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing. The collaboration aims to bring together a diverse team of scientists, clinical researchers, and clinicians from various sectors to utilize high-performance and quantum computing in order to enhance life sciences, improve healthcare, and expedite the development of new treatments for patients globally. Cleveland Clinic London will serve as a vital link between innovative clinical care in the UK and Cleveland Clinic’s worldwide network.
Led by Dr. Lara Jehi, Chief Research Information Officer at Cleveland Clinic, and Alessandro Curioni, IBM Fellow and Director of IBM Research Zurich, the partnership will explore the use of edge computing in healthcare and life sciences. Two clinical research projects have already been initiated, with one focusing on applying advanced artificial intelligence tools to objectively assess the impact of care on patients at Cleveland Clinic London. The goal is to enhance patient outcomes by analyzing how common hospital procedures influence overall health and quality of life. Another project, led by Dr. Jehi, will leverage quantum computing to analyze large-scale data sets and identify molecular features that can predict surgical response in patients with epilepsy. This endeavor aims to discover new biomarkers that can be utilized to customize treatment plans and improve patient outcomes.
Cleveland Clinic London’s BioResource, a research repository approved by the UK’s National Research Ethics Service, will provide valuable data for the projects. The BioResource, which has already enrolled over 600 patients through various studies, offers enhanced longitudinal data collection and analysis opportunities. By utilizing this data, the research teams aim to develop advanced AI models that can integrate diverse data types for better disease analysis and patient care.
The strategic partnership between Cleveland Clinic and IBM also includes the deployment of the world’s first quantum computer dedicated to healthcare research, known as IBM Quantum System One, at Cleveland Clinic. This collaboration represents a significant step towards leveraging next-generation technologies to accelerate biomedical research and address pressing challenges in the field.
Dr. Lara Jehi will be presenting at the 3rd Annual Economist Impact Marketing for the Quantum Global 2024 conference in London, where he will showcase his project on using quantum technology to discover biomarkers for epilepsy surgery outcomes. This initiative exemplifies how quantum computing can drive advancements in precision medicine and revolutionize the healthcare industry. The collaboration between Cleveland Clinic, IBM, and the Hartree Centre holds great promise for the future of healthcare and biomedical science, as researchers work together to harness the power of advanced computing technologies for the benefit of patients worldwide.
