VMware has announced the general availability of its Tanzu application platform.
The Tanzu AP provides an app-aware approach with pre-configured templates and a Kubernetes abstraction layer for developing containerized applications in a multi-cloud environment. Tanzu is VMware’s project to provide DevOps Kubernetes development facilities to allow containerized applications to run alongside virtual machines (VMs) in VMware’s vSphere hypervisor environment.
The goal is to make Kubernetes app development mainstream without destroying the VM app environment. According to a VMware blog shown to us before it went live, “Many organizations are experiencing the challenges of navigating the vast and complex cloud-native ecosystem and the steep learning curve that comes with it.” It mentions “seemingly incoherent tools that are difficult to set up and maintain, function inconsistently across teams, and are extremely difficult to connect to other applications and infrastructure.
