A new Apple Watch could be out later this year, and not just that Apple Watch 7. Apple is reportedly working on a rugged version of its flagship smartwatch that will target Garmin’s demographic of outdoor sports enthusiasts.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman“People who are familiar with the matter,” say that an Apple Watch variant for extreme sports enthusiasts could hit the market as early as 2021. It would likely complement the anticipated 7th generation Apple Watch, much like the company offered Apple Watch SE next to last year Apple Watch 6.
What would differentiate a rugged Apple Watch from the already familiar one? According to Gurman’s sources, Apple could introduce a new rubberized exterior that’s more protective than the familiar aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel cases.
While the Apple Watch is already a capable outdoor companion, offering GPS, emergency services, and all kinds of activity tracking, it’s usually not the preferred choice for serious hikers, bikers, and climbers. Instead, most of the best sports watches offer military-grade durability, including better water, temperature and scratch resistance.
Robust Apple Watch: Battery life is crucial
The leading outdoor sports watches also offer a significant increase in battery life compared to the existing Apple Watch. Most versions of Apple’s smartwatch last around 18 hours, but that estimate dips when continuous GPS tracking is used. 18 hours is how long some outdoor-facing wearables will last alone in their active GPS modes.
The recently published Garmin Enduro can take up to a year (yes, 365 days) in optimized battery saver mode to show you what Apple expects.
If Apple plans to compete with that best Garmin watchesit might look to improve the overall battery life of the Apple Watch. This has been a wish list upgrade for Apple Watch fans for a few years now, so we’re cautiously optimistic that it’s finally here.
Even Bloomberg’s sources temper their information. People “familiar with” said the rugged Apple Watch model still needs to be canceled or delayed. Apparently, this isn’t the first time Apple is considering launching this type of smartwatch variant as well.
The price and release date of the rugged Apple Watch
Whether you’ve been a long-time outdoor sports enthusiast or started a new adventurous activity in the past year due to indoor safety restrictions, a dedicated sports watch is a smart investment. We say investment because remarkable models like that Garmin Fenix 6 and enduro aren’t cheap.
It will be interesting to see whether the rumored Apple Watch with a sturdy case causes higher costs like other premium cases. It’s unlikely to get any cheaper than the base 7 Series (if you need an affordable sports watch, consider this one Garmin instinct or Amazfit T-Rex Pro.)
If the rugged Apple Watch actually releases along with the Series 7 this year, we should expect major leaks in the months ahead. Like clockwork, Apple has scheduled its annual Apple Watch updates for September.
And if the robust Apple Watch is not When we arrive this year, we wonder what trick the company has up its sleeve or what wrist. Since Apple split its Apple Watch and iPhone events last year, the Apple Watch 7 may not be offered alongside the debut Apple Watch 7 iPhone 13. The company will likely need some fodder for a keynote that focuses on the Apple Watch and goes beyond its flagship.
