The unauthorized access doesn’t seem to have compromised any Microsoft ((MSFT) Services or customer data, the company said in a blog post. However, an investigation revealed that the attackers used their access to Microsoft’s systems to display the company code.

“We saw unusual activity with a small number of internal accounts, and upon verification, we found that one account was being used to view source code in a number of source code repositories,” Microsoft said. “The account did not have permission to change code or technical systems, and our investigation also confirmed that no changes were made. These accounts have been investigated and corrected.”

The disclosure underlines the wide reach of the attackers, who the investigators found to be extremely sophisticated and well-equipped. And it suggests that corporate espionage may have been a motive as well as hunting for government secrets.
