The Apple Watch was a huge success, but it seems that Apple wants an even bigger market share: it is reportedly looking to compete against Garmin and Casio with a more rugged version of its wearable.
According to sources spoken to BloombergAn Apple Watch with a rugged case is being considered, with athletes, hikers, and anyone hanging out in “extreme environments” in the target market.
This is an idea that Apple seems to have thought about before – Bloomberg says an “extreme sports” version of the smartwatch was pegged back in 2015. If the new version gets the green light, we could see it in 2021 or 2022.
The new model is said to be named “Explorer Edition” in Apple, although it is not clear whether this will last until a full launch. It is rumored that added impact resistance and protection are key to the design, with a rubber exterior mentioned.

The current Apple Watch is water resistant up to 50 meters, but we expect the Explorer Edition to go even further in terms of the types of temperatures and bumps it can survive, much like something like that Casio G-Shock series.
We expect that Apple Watch 7 So if Apple rolls out an updated variant by the end of this year, that could be when it will be released – although the Apple team doesn’t have much time to finalize it.
We know that Apple has been open to different editions of its smartwatch in the past. The affordable SE version came out last year and special models have been launched in the past in collaboration with Nike and Hermès.
At the moment we can’t verify whether these rumors are true or not, but Bloomberg’s sources say the rugged model of the Apple Watch could still be canceled, delayed, or released – so don’t take this for certain that it just happens yet .
