The jury is still out on the effectiveness of AI as a learning tool, but the research results so far paint a bleak picture. The use of AI chatbots can impair critical thinking, lead to lower brain activity during cognitive tasks, and has been linked to memory loss.
However, there was one prominent study that gave AI advocates a glimmer of hope. Published in the magazine NatureIt aims to show that using AI like OpenAI’s ChatGPT can have a “large positive impact on improving learning performance” and a “moderate positive impact on improving learning perceptions and promoting higher-order thinking.”
The conclusion for the authors was clear: “ChatGPT should be actively integrated into various learning modes to improve student learning, especially problem-based learning,” they enthused.
