Broadcom has launched a new line of 400G Ethernet adapters tailored to address network bottlenecks when transferring large amounts of data for AI processing. The new processors feature a third-generation RoCE channel, low-latency congestion control technology, and telemetry capabilities. These adapters are designed for high-bandwidth, high-stress network environments commonly associated with AI infrastructure.
Although similar in function, Broadcom distinguishes its product from what is commonly referred to as smartNICs. Jas Tremblay, vice president and general manager of Broadcom’s data center solutions group, highlighted the differences between their product and traditional smartNICs. He emphasized that Broadcom’s adapters are optimized for AI without a multi-core CPU, being entirely hardware-based, high-performance, and geared towards low-power AI applications. Tremblay emphasized that these processors are focused on connectivity, high performance, low latency, and congestion control, rather than serving as a platform for downloading applications.
