Intel’s upcoming client processors, codenamed Lunar Lake, are set to power more than 80 new laptop designs at over 20 laptop manufacturers starting in the third quarter of 2024, just in time for the holiday season. These processors will deliver AI performance on a global scale for Copilot+ PCs, with features like Recall being available through an update. With the addition of Lunar Lake to the successful Intel Core Ultra processors, the company plans to ship over 40 million AI PC processors this year.

According to Michelle Johnston Holthaus, the executive vice president and general manager of Intel’s client computing group, Lunar Lake will offer breakthrough power efficiency, strong x86 architecture support, and a wide range of software enablement options for CPUs, GPUs, and NPUs. This will result in the most competitive joint customer hardware and software offering in Intel’s history.

An AI PC consists of a CPU, GPU, and NPU, each with specific AI acceleration capabilities. NPUs efficiently handle AI and machine learning tasks on the PC itself, instead of relying on cloud processing. The demand for AI-enabled PCs is growing as the need to automate and optimize tasks on personal computers increases.

Lunar Lake is expected to be a significant advancement in mobile processors for AI PCs, offering over 3x the AI performance of the previous generation. With more than 40 tera NPU operations per second (TOPS), Intel’s next-generation processors will support Copilot+ experiences. In addition to a higher-performance NPU, Lunar Lake will also feature over 60 TOPS GPUs, delivering over 100 platform TOPS.

Pavan Davuluri, the Corporate Vice President of Windows+ Devices at Microsoft, highlighted the deep co-engineering partnership between Intel and Microsoft that will bring improvements in security, battery life, and more with the launch of Lunar Lake. Microsoft is excited about the 40+ TOPS NPU in Lunar Lake, which will enable the delivery of Copilot+ experiences at scale.

As part of the AI PC Acceleration Program, Intel is collaborating with over 100 independent software vendors to enhance AI PC experiences in various areas such as personal assistants, audio effects, content creation, gaming, security, streaming, and video collaboration.

In summary, Intel’s Lunar Lake processors are set to revolutionize the AI PC market with their advanced performance capabilities. The collaboration between Intel and Microsoft will bring exciting new features to the market, enhancing user experiences and capabilities on AI-enabled PCs. Additionally, Intel’s efforts with independent software vendors will further improve AI PC experiences in various applications, showcasing the company’s commitment to innovation in the AI PC space.
