Hewlett Packard Company and Intel have successfully delivered the Aurora exascale supercomputer to the Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois. This supercomputer, with a computing capacity of one quintillion operations per second, will provide researchers with access to an AI-enabled system. Aurora is based on the HPE Cray EX supercomputer and utilizes the high-performance HPE Slingshot fabric, along with over 10,000 compute blades equipped with Intel Data Center GPU Max Series processors and Intel Xeon CPU Max processors.
Trish Damkroger, senior vice president and general manager of high-performance computing and AI infrastructure solutions at HPE, highlighted the significant computing capabilities of Aurora in facilitating breakthrough scientific discoveries and tackling some of the world’s most challenging problems. Ogi Brkic, vice president and general manager of data center AI solutions at Intel, emphasized that the Aurora supercomputer was specifically designed to support the scientific and research communities working in the fields of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence.
In order to prepare scientific codes for the Aurora supercomputer, Argonne researchers began using the two-rack testbed computer called Sunspot in April 2023. The installation of 10,624 computing blades on the Aurora exascale supercomputer was completed in June 2023 by a collaborative effort between HPE, Intel, and Argonne.
Overall, the Aurora supercomputer represents a significant advancement in the field of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, providing researchers at Argonne National Laboratory with unparalleled computing power to conduct groundbreaking research and address complex scientific challenges. Through the partnership between Hewlett Packard Company, Intel, and the Department of Energy, the Aurora exascale supercomputer is set to revolutionize the capabilities of researchers in utilizing AI and HPC technologies to drive innovation and discovery.
