IBM and AWS recently launched the Amazon RDS for Db2 Service at AWS re:Invent 2023, allowing clients to migrate their self-managed db2 databases to the cloud through a “bring your own license” model. This service has been instrumental in helping customers expedite their modernization initiatives and enhance service capabilities to meet application requirements. One such success story is Centevo Profile, a provider of asset and fund management solutions, which was able to modernize three times faster by adopting Amazon RDS for Db2.
In an effort to streamline operations and drive innovation, IBM and AWS have introduced new Db2 Standard Edition and Db2 Advanced Edition Consumption-based subscriptions on the AWS Marketplace. This allows customers to pay for Db2 licenses on an hourly basis in conjunction with their Amazon RDS for Db2 deployment. These consumption licenses offer a managed experience that enables customers to scale their service usage as needed and gain instant access to Db2 licenses for new instances, supporting various use cases such as development of new applications, testing before launch, production workloads, and flexible workloads.
Dominic Preuss, the General Manager of RDS Business Engines at AWS, highlighted the benefits of offering this licensing capability through AWS Marketplace, providing customers with a seamless experience when purchasing IBM Db2 licenses as part of Amazon RDS. Customers can now easily get started, even without owning a Db2 license, to address new or unpredictable workloads.
To subscribe to Db2 licenses, customers can complete a subscription on AWS Marketplace from the RDS for Db2 instantiation page. By selecting the edition of Db2 to deploy (Standard or Advanced), customers can choose the AWS Marketplace Under License option and complete the subscription registration with AWS and IBM. All deployment configuration can be done self-service, allowing for a quick deployment of instances. Once subscribed, metering and billing are managed on the AWS platform, enabling customers to scale their licenses as needed and avoid over-provisioning.
