Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced a $10 billion investment in Mississippi to build two data center complexes and create at least 1,000 new jobs, marking the largest capital investment in Mississippi’s history. This investment is part of Amazon’s long-term commitment to the state, as they have already invested $2.3 billion and supported local schools through STEAM education and Future Amazon engineer initiatives.
At a groundbreaking event with Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves, AWS unveiled plans to support the state through various initiatives, including an economic impact study projecting a $3.3 billion addition to Mississippi’s GDP and the creation of over 2,700 full-time equivalent jobs. AWS aims to contribute to the local community by offering workforce training, deploying renewable energy projects, and engaging in community participation programs.
AWS is dedicated to matching its electricity usage with 100% renewable energy, including its data centers. The company has already matched over 90% of its global electricity usage with renewable energy, with 100% matching for data centers in 19 of its AWS regions. A new partnership with local utility Entergy will enable 650 megawatts of new renewable energy projects in Mississippi over the next three years, supporting Amazon’s local operations and grid improvements.
In addition to renewable energy commitments, AWS is launching a new training center, the Amazon Community Workforce Accelerator Madison County, to support careers in cloud computing infrastructure. They are also donating equipment, curriculum, and training to elementary and middle schools in the area to promote technical and career learning. Workshops, workforce development programs, and collaborations with local colleges will further support skill development in Mississippi.
As part of AWS’s long-term commitment to Mississippi, the AWS InCommunities program has introduced initiatives such as a $250,000 fund for local programming, Girls Tech Series events to engage female innovators in STEAM activities, and the establishment of AWS Think Big Spaces for students to explore STEAM subjects. AWS appreciates the support of Governor Reeves and state and local leaders in making these initiatives possible.
For those interested in cloud technologies, AWS is hosting free workshops in Mississippi and a Fiber Employer Fair to discuss career opportunities. Through their investments and initiatives, AWS aims to have a positive impact on Mississippi’s economy, workforce development, and educational opportunities.
Overall, Amazon Web Services’ $10 billion investment in Mississippi signifies a significant commitment to the state’s growth and development across various sectors, including renewable energy, workforce training, and community engagement. Their initiatives aim to not only create jobs and boost the economy but also support education and skill development in the local community.
