Challenges in Data Present Obstacles for Adoption Despite Promise of Observability

OpsRamp, a Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) company, recently released a report titled “State of Observability 2024” which sheds light on the current state of observability in IT operations. The report, based on a survey of 603 IT decision makers, reveals that 56% of organizations are still exploring or testing observability solutions, with only 24% having implemented full observability across 90% of their organization.

Key findings from the report highlight that 61% of respondents focus on cloud and cloud-native observability solutions, while 57% cite data management and storage as their top concern. Additionally, 59% reported discovering previously unknown performance issues, and 58% are able to detect and respond to issues before users are affected. Moreover, 67% of organizations aim to replace network performance monitoring (NPM) tools with observability solutions.

The report also discusses the challenges organizations face when adopting observability solutions, with data management and storage standing out as the most significant concern. Managing the volume, complexity, and effective analysis of data generated by observability tools is a key challenge for organizations. Despite these challenges, organizations are already seeing benefits from their observability implementations, with 59% reporting discovering previously unknown performance issues, and 58% detecting and responding to issues proactively.

Observability is also driving tool consolidation, with 67% of organizations targeting NPM tools for replacement, indicating a shift toward proactive and holistic network management enabled by deeper insights from observability solutions.

To make significant improvements to observability, Dennis Callaghan, head of content at OpsRamp, recommends starting small and demonstrating initial value from limited deployments. He suggests focusing on cloud and cloud-native environments, as they are likely areas where most organizations have the least visibility.

Overall, the report highlights the early stages of adoption, key areas of focus, and challenges organizations face when implementing observability solutions. It emphasizes the importance of data management and storage, the benefits organizations are already experiencing, and the shift towards tool consolidation for proactive network management. It also provides recommendations for organizations looking to improve their observability practices.
