A new English course focusing on Taylor Swift will be offered at the Tampa campus for the first time this fall. The course, LIT3301: Cultural Studies and Popular Art, will be taught by English teachers Jessica Cook, Emily Jones, and Michelle Taylor. The class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30-10:45 a.m. and will explore Swift’s music and its cultural influences.
The idea for the course emerged during a lunch conversation where the educators analyzed the lyrics of Swift’s song “Begin Again.” The course will consist of both lectures and small group discussions, with each professor teaching their own section on Thursdays. Registration has already begun and 40 students have enrolled in each of the three sections, with 54 seats still available.
The course will cover themes from Swift’s albums, literary influences from Shakespeare to Emily Dickinson, and the impact of her music and fan culture. Music videos will be analyzed in class and assignments will include literary analysis of Swift’s songs and potentially songwriting. The only prerequisites for the course are English Composition 1 and 2, making it open to students of all majors.
Students are encouraged to register early due to the expected popularity of the course. Overall, LIT3301 promises to provide a unique and engaging look at Taylor Swift’s music and its broader cultural significance.
