Cisco’s sustainability efforts: Introducing Pelin

Pelin Salem, a technical leader at Cisco, shares her journey in integrating sustainability into her work. Her interest in sustainability began at a young age, and was further fueled by experiencing a natural disaster in Sonoma, California in 2017. Pelin’s career path includes a background in electrical engineering, academia, and bioscience before joining Cisco in 2019. She currently leads a project to optimize testing processes to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Pelin’s project, the “Test Optimization Dashboard,” aims to automate and visualize the impact of test optimization efforts, resulting in significant reductions in manual input and GHG emissions. She received support from Cisco executives and SMEs, as well as guidance from mentors, in implementing the project company-wide. Pelin emphasizes the importance of collaboration, innovation, and sustainability in her work.

In addition to her professional contributions, Pelin prioritizes sustainability in her personal life by reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting eco-friendly products. She educates her daughter on making environmentally conscious choices and encourages others to start with small actions to create a more sustainable future.

Cisco employees are also taking steps to reduce the company’s environmental impact, such as incorporating circular design principles in product development and implementing smart building technology for energy efficiency. The company aims to achieve 100% circular design in new products by 2025 and is working to eliminate unnecessary packaging materials.

Overall, Pelin’s story showcases the impact individuals can have in integrating sustainability into their daily work and personal lives. By collaborating, innovating, and making conscious choices, everyone can contribute to a more sustainable future.
