Google Translate has added 110 new languages, including Marwadi, Santali, and Tulu, with the help of Google’s PaLM2 large language model. This marks the largest expansion of languages in the history of the feature, bringing the total number of supported languages to 243. The new languages represent more than 614 million speakers, making translations accessible to around eight percent of the world’s population. Some of the new languages include major languages with over 100 million speakers, as well as languages spoken by smaller communities of indigenous people. Google has used advanced AI technology to add these new languages to Translate, considering factors such as regional varieties, dialects, and spelling standards. By collaborating with linguists and native speakers, Google aims to support more language varieties and spelling conventions over time.
