Samsung will use its second chip plant in Taylor, Texas, to make parts for AMD and Nvidia’s AI memory, South Korea’s Maeil Business Newspaper reported on Tuesday, citing industry sources.

The plant will produce base dies for high-bandwidth memory, the logic layer that sits at the bottom of the stacked memory chips feeding AI processors. Most of the booked volume is for AMD, per the report. The paper says the plant has already secured orders for its entire output.

Samsung declined to comment, and Reuters said it could not confirm the report. TNW has not independently verified it either.

The second Taylor fab will run on Samsung’s advanced 2-nanometre process and cover about 2.7 million square feet, roughly 1.5 times the size of the first plant, per the report. Formal construction is due to start this month. Equipment should arrive from February 2029, with mass production in 2030.

The first Taylor plant, a project that grew from $17 billion to a $37 billion total investment, is due to start mass production in 2027. Its anchor customer is Tesla, which signed a $16.5 billion contract for its AI5 and AI6 chips. The 1,268-acre site has room for up to 10 fabs.

The project has been visible on the ground for months. Taylor’s city council approved engineering support for the second fab’s permits back in March, and Samsung has been hiring for the campus. The first plant’s bill includes a $4.75 billion subsidy under the US CHIPS Act.
