What happened this week

Apple reclaimed the top market-cap spot on Friday, overtaking Nvidia as investors gravitated to what they see as a safer bet amid unease around artificial intelligence spending. Even with Apple shares down 1.2% to a $5.03 trillion market value and Nvidia off 4.2% to $4.93 trillion, that was enough to put Apple back on top for the first time since a brief lead in late July.

Friday’s declines came alongside disappointing updates from several large tech names. Intel and Amazon reported results that fell short of hopes, after earlier letdowns from Alphabet and Meta, refocusing attention on AI investment plans that remain under scrutiny.

Why investors pulled back on AI beneficiaries

Skepticism about massive AI infrastructure budgets has worked in Apple’s favor this year, as the company has kept capital spending in check. Apple is the standout among the Magnificent Seven in 2026, up 27%, more than double the gain of second place Nvidia, a major winner from AI buildouts.

The spending gulf is showing up in cash generation and funding. At Alphabet and Amazon, free cash flow has turned negative, pushing both to lean more on debt markets while higher interest rates lift borrowing costs. In contrast, analysts expect Apple’s free cash flow to increase 38% to $142 billion for fiscal 2026, a period that ended on September 30.
