Microsoft published the results of its AI Diagnostic Orchestrator — a multi-agent system that reasons through a patient case the way a physician would, step by step — in the journal Science on October 22, 2026, and the numbers are striking: on a set of 304 notoriously difficult medical cases, the system matched the correct diagnosis 83.2% of the time, while the generalist physicians who attempted the same cases with full reference access averaged 36.1%.

The orchestrator, called MAI-DxO, also cost less than the physician workups. Whether that benchmark advantage translates into real-world clinical gains is a separate, open question that a new hospital partnership is only now beginning to test.

What MAI-DxO Is and How the Chain-of-Debate Architecture Works
