Nvidia Corp. (NVDA, Financials), the AI chip leader, could see more of its supply chain move closer to the U.S. as Taiwan prepares a new round of investment tied to artificial-intelligence hardware.
Taiwan is apparently planning to assist in the construction of an industrial complex in Texas that might cost as much as $4 billion.
The objective is to provide smaller suppliers that are part of the Nvidia manufacturing ecosystem a U.S. presence close to clients and production partners.
That matters because Nvidia relies on a tight network of firms that includes TSMC, memory vendors and server builders.
In addition to TSMC’s $265 billion plan for Arizona, Taiwanese businesses are already promising billions more to U.S. manufacturing.
At the same time, Taiwan is tightening export regulations on high-end AI processors and servers destined for China.
That’s a two-sided shift: greater capacity coming into the U.S. as access to China becomes more restricted.
For Nvidia, the upside is a more localized supply chain. The concern is that tougher export controls might make it more difficult to access one of the world’s biggest IT marketplaces.
Then monitor if the Texas project goes forward, and which suppliers to Nvidia put cash behind.
